American Red Cross Molecular Technologist III in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Responsible for the performance of high-complexity genotyping and associated tasks in a busy CLIA-licensed, AABB-accredited molecular testing laboratory responsible for patient and blood donor testing. Manual and automated DNA extraction and FDA approved tests as well as lab-developed tests. Testing platforms include single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panels involving end-point detection of SSP-PCR, bead-based extension reactions, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and Sanger sequence analysis of genomic and cDNA. Responsible for interpretation of results and patient report generation, preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment and qualification of reagents. Responsible for training and assessing technical staff in local procedures.
- Responsible for the molecular testing in the laboratory and ensures the testing is of the highest quality. 2. Maintains day-to-day activities and organization of the laboratory.3. Contributes to the organization of processes, purchasing, inventory, and maintenance of laboratory reagents.4. Performs extraction of high quality DNA and RNA from blood samples or other bodily fluids.5. Designs primer pairs for blood group antigens and performs RFLP analysis using appropriate software. Organizes and manages primer pairs for proper dilution, storage and inventory.6. Develops and performs PCR, AS-PCR, PCR-RFLP test methods. Conducts preliminary research and troubleshooting of molecular methods.7. Performs DNA gel electrophoresis. 8. Interprets PCR, AS-PCR and PCR-RFLP typing results. Assigns alleles/allele codes. 9. Performs RNA isolation and cDNA synthesis, and cloning.10. Aids in development of and performs high-throughput automated DNA extraction and allele testing.11. Drafts reports of testing for supervisor and director review.12. Clones genes and analyzes sequences.13. With supervisor input, directs training and documentation of new staff in molecular techniques.14. Aids in preparation and management of all reagents (including QC) used in testing. Ensures adequate inventory of reagents and supplies.15. Performs and maintains records of reagent and equipment QC.
Qualifications Masters of Science (MS) in Biology or related field with four years of molecular genetics laboratory experience or equivalent required.
Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Biology or related field with six years of molecular genetics laboratory experience or equivalent required.
Must have a superior knowledge of molecular genetics and operation of equipment used in the laboratory.
Must have a good knowledge of red cell and platelet systems. Must have a good working knowledge of PCs and applicable software programs.
Must have a comprehensive knowledge of regulatory issues related to laboratory work performance.
Must have problem solving skills for technical and personnel issues.
